In Russia, the World Cup ended, which became a great sporting holiday.
Our city hosted a number of crucial matches in a unique arena, specially built for the World Cup, one of the most high-tech in the world, fully meeting all international standards. The stadium "St. Petersburg" was the first in terms of attendance of the championship games.
According to experts, Petersburg is recognized as one of the best city-organizers of the tournament. According to the participants of the championship, fans, and our guests, sports fights in the city on the Neva were held at the highest organizational level.
I thank everyone who has taken an active part in the preparation and conduct of the tournament - representatives of executive authorities, law enforcement agencies, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Rosgvardiya units, public and volunteer organizations. We all worked for the result as one team.
Preparation for the championship has become a powerful incentive for the development of urban infrastructure. On the eve of the sports festival, two new metro stations - Begovaya and Novokrestovskaya - were opened, the pedestrian Yakhtenny Bridge and the Betancourt Bridge were built. A new traffic intersection has been commissioned on Pulkovskoe highway, which decorated the front entrance to the city from the Pulkovo airport. The highly professional work of our designers and builders deserves our gratitude and recognition. All infrastructural heritage of the championship will please Petersburgers and our guests for many years.
St. Petersburg is the birthplace of the national Olympic movement, national football. Big football once again has shown that sport can unite people on the basis of common cultural, humanistic values. St. Petersburg - the cultural capital of Russia and the largest sports center - once again demonstrated its cordiality and hospitality, kindness and benevolence, as well as the ability to conduct large-scale international competitions. I hope that the fans who have visited us from all over the world will once again visit the city on the Neva River to admire its beauty.
Thank you all for the work done for the benefit of St. Petersburg and Russia!
Governor of St. Petersburg G. Poltavchenko
